I grew up in Florence where I studied art to undergraduate level, then architecture in Birmingham and Conservation of Historic Buildings at Bath University. I worked as a conservation architect in the Midlands for several years before dedicating myself to painting and printing.

I am a landscape artist and my work crosses between abstraction and representation, all borne from strong emotions in response to place.  I am fascinated by urban wastelands, industrial landscapes, building and structures whether in cities or in past industrial sites, now part of the countryside and weathered surfaces.

My point of departure starts with the notion that the ‘natural world’ is hardly ever an untouched concept. The philosophical and ‘immanent’ essence of a place with histories, intangible heritage, quality of space, light, colour, dynamism, and the countless way they interact, shape the emotional spirit of a place; these are all matters that influence my approach.

I start with a sketchbook making drawings at sites that interest me, not so much as a faithful record of the actual places but as a note of the essence that stuck me at the time.

In the studio I reimagine this essence my in drawings, or in collages, which then take a life of their own. These secondary sketches are often the starting point for my paintings which are process led. Added layers, scraping off and more layers reveal the original intention; the reinventions provide further questions, and ambiguity as an opportunity for reflection which I can offer the viewer.

I work in series from ideas to families of finished work. I believe that dialogue between the pieces inform one another and provide continuity as they all draw on my architectural experience, my Italian origin and my sense of belonging here in the UK.

I paint mainly with oils and work outside with charcoal, watercolours or inks.

I practice printmaking with etching in particular because I see that the elaborate processes that printmaking offers, as invaluable tools for visual analysis and development of my artwork.
